The holiday takes flight on 8/24 to honor the L.A. Lakers superstar and tributes spread.
August 24 has become Kobe Bryant Day since it’s 8/24 — the two jersey numbers the Los Angeles Lakers legend cultural icon wore during his basketball career. The holiday was created to honor Bryant and his daughter Gianna.
Since his death, tributes to the Lakers star keep popping up all around the world, and so far there are at least 331 Kobe murals — more than two dozen of which have been added in the past month alone.
About 200 of the murals are in Southern California alone. The website kobemural.com is actually keeping track of all of the murals, and they've created a map for those that would like to find them.
Bryant died in a helicopter crash on January 26 along with his 13-year-old daughter and seven other people while traveling to a youth basketball game in Ventura County.
Kobe Bryant Day comes the day after his actual birthday.
On Sunday, August 23, Vanessa Bryant posted a photo on Instagram wishing her late husband a happy 42nd birthday, and then opening up about the pain of losing Kobe and their Gianna — saying she's "been completely broken inside."
Natalia Bryant, Bryant's 17-year-old daughter, also wished her dad a happy birthday by posting a photo on her Instagram.
In addition, Nike paid tribute to Kobe Bryant with a video featuring a performance by Kendrick Lamar with the theme that Bryant taught people to “be better.”
The video ends with the message “Mamba forever.”
