Most Dog-Friendly Cities in the U.S. in 2020

Study analyzed data for 100 of the largest U.S. cities across the following seven metrics.

They're fluffly, walk on all fours (usually), and bring joy to people every day. Personally, I love seeing their reaction whenever I come home. They're one of the only species that can get away with having that much excitement when someone walks through a door.

So, where's the best place to raise a canine?

The website SmartAsset compiled the list of the 25 most dog-friendly cities in the U.S. The study analyzed data for 100 of the largest cities across six metrics:

  • Dog parks per 100,000 residents

  • Dog-friendly restaurants

  • Dog-friendly shopping centers

  • Median home value

  • Walk score

  • Number of pet stores and veterinary offices

For the year 2020, Tucson was named the most dog-friendly city in the nation.

Tucson came out on top thanks to its 251 dog-friendly restaurants and high concentration of dog parks and veterinary offices. There are 86 for every 10,000 establishments, according to SmartAsset.

Las Vegas, Nevada came in at second and Madison, Wisconsin, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Portland, Oregon rounded out the top five. Did your city make the list?

As you can see in the list above, western states did well in the study overall, with six west coast cities and states featured in the top 11.

The American Pet Products Association reported that Americans spent at least $95.7 billion on their pets in 2019! Approximately $37 billion of which went toward pet food and treats.

I mean, it sounds like a lot of money, but how can you resist feeding and caring for the little fuzzballs?
