A long, long time ago, Nintendo found other ways to entertain people
One of the world's most famous entertainment companies celebrated a pretty significant milestone in 2019. That year, the video game giant Nintendo acclaimed its 130th birthday.
That sounds weird, right?
Well, you read that correctly. The entertainment company has been around since September 23, 1889.
The beginning
A long, long time ago, back before video games were the staple they are today, Nintendo found other ways to entertain people.
The company was originally headdquartered in Kyoto, Japan, the company began its business by creating Hanafuda — Japanese playing cards. Business was great but they eventually moved on to making toys.
Then came the '70s
Nintendo took a leap into the video game world in the 1970s, manufacturing the "Color TV-Game" console series, which was only available in Japan at the time.
This funky little console was followed by the worldwide release of the Nintendo Entertainment System — the NES is what the cool kids call it.
The NES is widely regarded as helping to jumpstart the home video game industry in the 1980s. Before this, gamers would need to head to an arcade to have fun, but Nintendo's presence was well-received amongst the gaming community.
Today, Nintendo's mascot and worldwide plumber, Mario, is one of the most widely recognized characters in the world, and the video game company has sold hundreds of millions of home and handheld consoles worldwide.
That's not too shabby for a company that's been around longer than sliced bread.
