The cult classic is joining Beavis & Butthead, a Daria spin-off, and others.
Comedy Central is making a major push to have an abundance of adult animation on its channel, and I couldn't be more excited about their recent transaction.
The network recently announced that they're bringing back Beavis & Butthead, but now it has been given a series "greenlight" to produce a reimagining of the cult classic, The Ren & Stimpy Show. In addition, Comedy Central is working on a Daria spin-off show called Jodie.
“I want to thank our partners at Nick Animation as we re-imagine these iconic characters with a new creative team,” said Nina L. Diaz, President of Content and Chief Creative Officer for ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group.”
The original series, created by John Kricfalusi and launched on Nickelodeon in 1991, featured the adventures of Ren — an angry and emotional Chihuahua — and Stimpy — a friendly dimwitted cat. It aired for just five seasons on Nickelodeon before the network pulled the plug in December 1995.
The news of the reboot comes right on the heels of the announcement of the Happy Happy, Joy Joy: The Ren and Stimpy Story documentary, which comes out on August 14, 2020.
“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio,” said Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group.
A release date has yet to be set, but I'm sure they'll make the announcement sooner rather than later.
Having The Ren & Stimpy Show and Beavis & Butthead on the same network is something I dreamed of as a kid. Back then I'd have to switch back and forth to MTV and Nickelodeon — an annoying task for a kid.
I wonder if my parents will pay for my cable bill so I can watch the new series...
