The Reason Why Cats Love Boxes

What's so special about climbing in, on top, or out of them that cats find so appealing?

Have you ever gone to a pet store, loaded up on miscellaneous toys, and then brought them home to your cat, only to see your cat hop into the box you carried the toys in?

It's just what cats do.

But why? What's so special about climbing in, on top, or out of them that cats find so appealing? Well, it turns out they’re hunting for something to do.

Tech Insider posted a video back in 2016 featuring the voice of Abigail Tucker, author of The Lion in the Living Room: How House Cats Tamed Us and Took Over the World.

She explains what’s really going on with felines and boxes. Part of the attraction is simple and it's just that house cats are looking for something to do.

So many cats are "hopelessly bored" and most don’t like being contained. Exploring a new box is just a way to pass the time. You can check out the video below:

So, diving in and out of boxes is similar to their natural hunting technique. Cats don’t chase their prey, they pounce on everything! Therefore, a box is an ideal hiding spot to leap out of.
