Keep your pooch safe by keeping these 10 foods out of its reach
I'm all for serving our canine companions high-quality, close to nature foods that support their health and well-being, and it's important that we factor in knowing what foods are toxic to them while doing so.
Dogs have similar but much more sensitive stomachs compared to us humans and, scientifically, don't have the biology to break down foods the same way. Therefore, it's wise to not assume that all we eat is safe to feed them, and while we've all heard that chocolate is a no-no, some of the other seemingly safe items on this list might surprise you.
Here's a list of 10 foods to keep far from your loving pup companions and why (in no particular order):
Macadamia nuts: can cause inflammation in the pancreas
Baker's yeast: can lead to life-threatening bloating (GDV) and alcohol poisoning
Grapes and raisins: can lead to sudden kidney failure
Spinach: blocks the body's ability to absorb calcium and can lead to kidney damage
Caffeinated drinks/foods: can cause increased blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmias
Avocado: can lead to pancreatitis
Chicken (poultry) bones: can puncture the gastrointestinal tract or lead to choking
Xylitol (a natural sugar-substitute): can lead to dangerously low glucose levels and may also cause liver failure
Garlic and onions: can cause oxidative damage to red blood cells, resulting in anemia
Apple cores and seeds: contain a small amount of cyanide which is released when broken or chewed
So while sharing can indeed be caring, that may not be the case when it comes to offering up your food to your doggo. And a little research can save its life and you a pretty penny in vet bills.
